The guidance of the Spirit of truth is another vital gift given to us by God. The importance of the Spirit of truth’s ministry is evident in what it took God to give it to us. Jesus told his disciples that if he didn’t go away (be killed, resurrected, and ascend to heaven) then the Spirit of truth could not come (John 16:7). According the Jesus, the ministry of the Spirit of truth is so important and valuable to us that it is better than Jesus being here on the earth!
It is best for you that I go away, because if I don't, the Comforter won't come. (John 16:7)
The prayer for the guidance of the Spirit of truth is simple (from John 16:13).
“Father, in the name of Jesus I thank you that you send forth your Spirit of truth to guide and lead us into all the truth and show us things to come. I pray that you send forth your Spirit of truth to guide and lead us into all the truth and show us things to come.”
This prayer should be part of our daily prayer. Even when prayed daily, it is still profitable to pray it again every time when sitting down to sow the word of God into our heart, or any other time when we are seeking God to perceive and understand truth and things to come.
Since it is so closely related, the following prayer (from Colossians 1:9) to be filled with the knowledge of God’s will is a good one to add to the end of the prayer for the Spirit of truth.
“I pray that you fill us with the knowledge of your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.”
